Adventures of an Oxyphile 2

The American Association for Respiratory Care, as a long-time friend and colleague of Dr. Thomas Petty, is both honored and privileged to provide his final book, “Adventures of an Oxy-Phile2,” in audio book format.

Thomas L. Petty, MD, a Pulmonologist, was a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. He was also Professor of Medicine Emeritus at National Jewish Health in Denver. Dr. Petty, an international authority on respiratory disease, published over 800 articles in medical journals and was author or editor of 45 books or editions.

Dr. Petty during his long and tenured career received many honors and awards, too numerous to name here. The American Association of Respiratory Care awarded Dr. Petty a Master fellowship (1999) and presented him with two of its most prestigious awards, the Jimmy A. Young Medal (2003) and the Dr. Charles Hudson Award for Cardiopulmonary Public Health (2004).

Dr. Petty dedicated his life to improving the quality of life for respiratory patients. His own need for supplementary oxygen afforded him a unique insight that has touched the lives and welfare of patients throughout the world.

While Dr. Petty’s journey concluded on December 12, 2009, everyone one of us is a better person for having known him and benefited from his life’s work. The AARC on behalf of Dr. Petty and his estate hope that you enjoy his final gift to the pulmonary and respiratory community and the patients they serve.

Book Review—by Patrick J. Dunne MEd, RRT, FAARC

In December of 2009, with the passing of Thomas L Petty MD, the world of pulmonary medicine lost a true icon. Beginning with his graduation from medical school in 1958, Dr Tom (as many patients and colleagues affectionately knew him) enjoyed a career that spanned more than 5 decades. Fortunately for patients around the world, Dr Petty’s career is rich with contributions advancing the art and science of pulmonary and critical care medicine.
