In this episode of Big Ideas Theater, Dr. Alexandre Rotta, MD, FCCM, discusses pediatric ARDS beyond mechanical ventilation.

According to Dr. Rotta, management of children with ARDS continues to be a challenge for the pediatric clinician and goes beyond mechanical ventilation. In his Big Ideas Theater segment, Dr. Rotta explains that previously pediatric ARDS has simply followed the adult definition of ARDS, to include treatment procedures. In 2015, however, that changed when a pediatric definition of the disease was formed, tailored to the specific needs of children.

Dr. Rotta also briefly explains in his video some pharmacological options and concerns for possible treatments. Because these options have less reliability, non-pharmacological options, such as mechanical ventilation, are the mainstay of treatment.

Big Ideas Theater 2017 was filmed at the AARC Congress 2017 in Indianapolis, IN. Congress speakers and lecturers shared their expertise and insights during these brief interviews.
