Congress-goers who came in a day early had the chance to take part in some great pre-events, but AARC Congress 2022 officially kicked off this morning with our opening session. Here are a few highlights of the activities so far —
AARC Master Class
Yesterday’s session on “Research and Publication in Respiratory Care” drew a great group of Congress-goers who spent the day learning more about how to conduct a research study — and how to submit it to the AARC’s science journal, RESPIRATORY CARE, and maximize its chances of being published. Along the way attendees became better consumers of the scientific literature as well.
Recognizing Compassionate Care
The National Respiratory Patient Advocacy Award went to Cheryl Skinner from the University of Kansas Medical Center. Cheryl was recognized for her valiant efforts in patient advocacy during the awards ceremony.
ARCF Fundraising Reception
Last night’s ARCF Fundraising Reception gave Congress-goers the chance to learn more about the Foundation and the work it does on behalf of the profession and its patients — all while enjoying a great dinner and the opportunity to support the Foundation through their attendance.
Awards Ceremony Recognizes Excellence
Outstanding members of the profession were honored for their contributions during this morning’s Award Ceremony sponsored by the AARC, ARCF, and NBRC. Taking the top honor this year — the AARC’s Jimmy A. Young Medal — was long-time RT educator Douglas S. Gardenhire, EdD, RRT, RRT-NPS, FAARC.
Keynote Address: Looking at What We’ve Lost
Wes Ely, MD, MPH, took the podium this morning to address Congress-goers in a talk titled “Rebuilding What We’ve Lost in COVID-19: A Perspective from the ICU.” Using the power of human story to cast a light on human suffering and a scientifically proven method for amplifying humanism and dignity, Dr. Ely provided attendees with a path forward from the pandemic.
Exhibit Hall Opens to Cheers
After two years of virtual meetings, Congress-goers were super excited to see the ribbon being cut on this year’s in-person exhibit hall. Attendees flooded into the hall, anxious to see the latest that respiratory care industry has to offer.

Researchers began presenting their abstracts and posters today as the OPEN FORUM kicked off with sessions on aerosol therapy, airway care and oxygen therapy, and management. The next two days will highlight even more areas of the profession and an Editor’s Choice session on Friday will feature the top eight abstracts this year.
