In this episode of Big Ideas Theater, Thomas Piraino, RRT, FCSRT, FAARC, from St. Michaels Hospital in Toronto, visits the stage to discuss Diaphragm Protective Ventilation. This terminology may be new to some respiratory therapists. Piraino discusses how the effects mechanical ventilation can have on the diaphragm can go under recognized.

Most clinicians know that atrophy of the diaphragm can occur quickly on ventilation. However, allowing the diaphragm to work can cause injury in another area. Piraino addresses this issue and more.
