The AARC education team kicked off its new Summer Ventilation Webcast Series on May 28. The series includes four webcasts and runs through July 9. Participants will need to register for each webcast in the series separately.
“The Summer Ventilation Webcast Series spotlights key areas of mechanical ventilation to empower respiratory therapists to provide safe and effective patient care and educate their colleagues as we focus on evidence-based medicine,” said Shawna Strickland, PhD, RRT, FAARC, AARC associate executive director of member services.

May 28 – “VAE vs VAP: Different by Design”

Mechanically ventilated patients are at high risk for developing complications and, for many years, critical care teams have been tracking the number of patients developing ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP). However, the ability to use VAP surveillance for prevention of complications is limited. In 2013, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released definitions for ventilator associated events (VAE). This presentation will identify the limitations of VAP, discuss the reasoning behind the CDC’s VAE definitions, and outline strategies respiratory therapists can use to prevent VAEs.

June 4 – “Optimizing Lung Protection in the NICU”

Ventilating our tiniest patients can be difficult and there are many variables to consider as we seek to support the respiratory status of neonatal patients. This presentation will outline mechanisms of lung injury and discuss evidence-based approaches for noninvasive ventilation, surfactant delivery techniques, and lung protective strategies for conventional and high-frequency ventilation.

June 26 – “Noninvasive Respiratory Support: Review of the 2018 RESPIRATORY CARE Journal Conference”

In June 2018, the AARC Journal Conference focused on “Noninvasive Respiratory Support in Adults” was held in St. Petersburg, FL, in June 2018. The proceedings are published in the June 2019 issue of RESPIRATORY CARE and address topics such as physiology of noninvasive respiratory support, ventilator-induced lung injury, noninvasive respiratory support for various patient populations, the patient experience during noninvasive respiratory support, and noninvasive respiratory support at the end of life. The presenter, who served as a co-chair of this conference, will review the papers, discuss how noninvasive respiratory support has evolved over the past year, and potential future directions of noninvasive respiratory support.

July 9 – “Mechanical Ventilation: Liberation and Long-Term”
Presented by Brian Carlin, MD, FAARC
Patients who require mechanical ventilation for a longer period of time may require unique strategies for effective ventilation and, optimally, liberation from the mechanical ventilator. The presenter will define key terms related to long-term mechanical ventilation and liberation from mechanical ventilation as well as discuss effective weaning techniques and strategies for effective patient care.
