AARC Board of DirectorsSpread the word: Respiratory therapists are experts on the subject of asthma.

Community Involvement

Asthma is a key condition treated by respiratory therapists, and as such, respiratory therapists are uniquely positioned to do some good in the community by raising awareness of the condition. May is the perfect time to do just that, with National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month running all month long and World Asthma Day scheduled for the 3rd.

Why should you step up? Putting yourself out there as an asthma expert will not only raise asthma awareness, it will also help your community recognize the important role respiratory therapists play in the care of asthma patients every day.

How Do I Raise Awareness in My Community?

  • Offer to speak about asthma at local schools, churches or community centers.
  • Offer to have a reporter come out and do a story on your asthma management program, or send in a press release outlining some important facts about asthma and how it is treated.
  • Local media care most about local people. So, telling your hometown newspaper, radio or TV station the RT story is the most effective way to garner good PR.
