Many people with COPD also live with obstructive sleep apnea, or (OSA). Separately, COPD and OSA contribute to the mortality of hundreds of thousands of Americans every year. However, when OSA coexists with COPD it is referred to as “Overlap Syndrome.” Proper use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, or sleep mask, is crucial for those with both of these conditions.

About 60% of people with both COPD and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (“Overlap Syndrome”) are not using their Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) mask as prescribed.
The AARC is working with the COPD Foundation and American Sleep Apnea Association to help patients make better use of their therapies, overcome barriers and achieve their quality of life goals. The study will test whether free education and coaching from respiratory therapists and other individuals living with COPD and OSA can improve CPAP adherence and other important patient-centered outcomes. Individuals who use oxygen with their CPAP therapy at night are also encouraged to sign up. Your patients may be eligible for the O2VERLAP study. Eligible patients may reserve their seat in the virtual classroom today at copdf.co/overlap.
