A team of AARC members from across North America embarked on a new clinical practice guideline development program earlier this November. Their work will continue through the next year and they have set publication goals of 2019.
This effort is made possible by the AARC Board of Directors who, earlier this year, approved the proposal to develop six new clinical practice guidelines:
- Oxygen administration for adult patients
- Oxygen administration for neonatal and pediatric patients
- Tracheostomy care for adult patients
- Tracheostomy care for neonatal and pediatric patients
- Suctioning of the artificial airway
- Capillary Blood Gas sampling for neonatal and pediatric patients
“As a member of the AARC Board of Directors, I am thrilled to have been a part of approving this proposal. It’s a great way to advance our process for developing and renewing clinical practice guidelines,” said Dr. Brian K. Walsh, PhD, RRT-NPS, AARC president. “This new method still remains evidence based; however, it allows us to be much more efficient. We have a wonderful team of members ready and dedicated to making this program a success. I believe we will produce quality products to help us improve patient care and demonstrate our value to the world. It is truly an honor to be a part of this meaningful experience.”
According to Dr. Shawna Strickland, PhD, RRT, FAARC, AARC associate executive director for member services, the AARC’s clinical practice guidelines have provided guidance to clinical practice since the first publishing in 1991.
“This effort will update a couple of older guidelines, provide new recommendations in areas of clinical practice, and serve the medical community with evidence-based recommendations to improve patient care and safety,” Strickland said. “The initial meeting was a great way for us to all meet and collaborate face-to-face and have an opportunity to clarify any concepts as we start this detailed project.”
