In this episode of Big Ideas Theater, Kimberly S. Firestone, MSc, RRT, joins the stage. Firestone works at Akron Children’s Hospital and discusses the increasing importance of non-invasive ventilation when it comes to the handling of a premature infant. She goes on to discuss the history of non-invasive ventilation in neonatal care and how it is making a comeback.
Firestone explains how good bedside management could not exist without the role of the respiratory therapist in neonatal care. When working with the neonatal population it is imperative to have an intuition in caring for these infants, due to their inability to communicate. She continues to discuss the teamwork aspect of her neonatal group. Each morning her team makes respiratory rounds in the NICU to discuss each infant and their specific needs.
