Respiratory therapists (RTs) have the privilege of serving populations of all ages that are directly and indirectly impacted by nicotine addiction. Due to our position, RTs can be and should be armed with the information to assist people interested in nicotine cessation regardless of the reason they are receiving care. It is a myth that individuals with acute/chronic behavioral health conditions (mental health and/or substance abuse disorders) are uninterested in nicotine cessation. It is also untrue that attempting to quit nicotine can exacerbate a behavioral health condition. It is imperative that RTs take every chance to offer people the opportunity to have information about cessation and function as a health care advocate that can provide the information they need to be successful in quitting.
