The term “futility” refers to interventions that are not likely to produce a meaningful medical benefit for the patient. The impact of medically futile interventions extends not only to the patient and family but also the healthcare providers. This presentation will explore the concept of medical futility, the resultant moral distress, and its impact on respiratory therapists. The presenter will explore historical and recent medical cases of medical futility.
