Popular Program Retires After 25 Years

Current Topics debuts this month

For the past 25 years the AARC’s Professor’s Rounds series has been educating respiratory therapists about key topics in the profession. As respiratory therapists came together in department meeting rooms and other venues, they learned how to bring cutting edge therapies to their patients from some of the leading names in the profession via the magic of first video tapes, and later, DVDs – all while earning CRCEs to maintain their state license to practice.

Over the years, this popular series delivered need-to-know information on everything from the latest mechanical ventilation modes to new treatment options for patients with asthma and COPD.

But even the best programs eventually run their course, and this year the Association is retiring Professor’s Round in favor of a new DVD series called Current Topics that just launched with a presentation on Ebola featuring Lewis Rubinson, MD, who shares the knowledge he gained by caring for Ebola patients in Sierra Leone.

Thanks to a streamlined production process, the new series is offered at a considerable cost savings as well.

“Professor’s Rounds has supplied respiratory therapists with the information they need to remain on the cutting edge for a quarter century now, but we felt that the formatting for the presentations – in other words, the professor/moderator interchange – might be a bit dated,” says AARC Associate Executive Director-Education Shawna Strickland, PhD, RRT-NPS, FAARC. “The new Current Topics series follows the more dynamic lecture format, which we believe will prove more engaging for today’s RTs.”

Like its predecessor, Current Topics will release one DVD per month between now and September, making it easy for RT managers to schedule continuing education for their staffs.

Also like its predecessor, the series promises to deliver the topics RTs most want to learn more about. In addition to the first session on Ebola, the 2015 series will delve into everything from ventilating trauma patients and advances in respiratory monitoring to managing refractory asthma, respiratory care ethics, noninvasive ventilation, and more. Each program will carry one hour of CRCE.

“The AARC’s number one objective is to ensure respiratory therapists have the continuing education they need to continue to deliver safe and effective patient care,” says Dr. Strickland. “We believe our new Current Topics series represents one more way we can meet that goal.”
