2020 will be remembered as the year when a pandemic brought much of the world to its knees, the U.S. included. RTs will remember it as a time when they were challenged to care for patients under almost unbelievable circumstances, working against all odds to save as many lives as they could.

Celebrate RC Week 2020

But therapists will recall the year for something else too: the first time in the history of their profession when their role in the health care system led the headlines.

Nicholas Prush, MHA, RRT, RRT-ACCS, believes National Respiratory Care Week offers a great opportunity for therapists to keep the momentum going.

“The importance of celebrating RC Week every year is to recognize our profession,” says Prush, who serves as president of the Michigan Society for Respiratory Care. “Since our profession has been highlighted in national media outlets, it would be an excellent year to provide acknowledgment for our profession across the nation.”

How can we ensure every RT is recognized for the hard work they’ve put in during COVID-19?

Prush suggests one good way to ensure RTs feel the love would be to hand out an award to each and every one of them.

“Award all RTs for working on the frontline during these unprecedented times,” he says.

It’s an idea worth considering for departments across the country that are looking for a unique way to shine the spotlight on their hardworking staffs this October 25-31.
