Announced at the Student Symposium for New Professionals at AARC Congress 2019, students from Laurel Technical Institute in Hermitage, PA, were congratulated by their peers for winning first place in the 2019 AARC Education Section Student Respiratory Therapy Video Contest. Their achievement comes as a result of their student-made video, “What Do You Make?” Check it out:

Students taking part in this project include Megan May, Allison Pitts, Jaclyn Busin, Katelynn Caldwell, Rebecca Ewing, Teirra Ferris, Bailie Pago, Breanna Schlatter, and Amber Tolnar.
“I could not be prouder of our students,” said Mary Mittwede, BSRC, RRT, RRT-ACCS, RPFT, program director. “They are a very enthusiastic and deserving group.”
Mittwede explained that the video is “touching and has a compelling message.” She presented the concept to the students and they led the way on filming and editing.
In addition to the video being showcased at the Student Symposium, it was also shown at the Education Section Meeting at Congress. AARC President Karen Schell, DHSc, MHSc, BSRC, RRT-NPS, RRT-SDS, RPFT, RPSGT, AE-C, CTTS, also treated the students to a congratulatory pizza party.
Students taking part in the 2019 video contest set out to develop a video that achieved the following goals:
- Shows what a respiratory therapist is and what they do.
- Increases the awareness of the profession on a national level.
- Highlights what you as the creator likes about the profession and/or why you chose this career.
“The students benefitted from making this video by coming together and building a stronger bond as a team,” Mittwede said. “It provided them with a creative outlet to express themselves. It also allowed time to reflect on what they really love about their chosen profession.”
