COPD National Action plan

In keeping with November as COPD Awareness Month, the AARC participated in a recent meeting convened by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to discuss progress members of the COPD community have made in meeting goals and objectives laid out in the COPD National Action Plan (CNAP).

Representatives from organizations from across the U.S. came together to discuss the COPD National Action Plan.

Groups representing the federal arena, those whose activities are national in scope, and others whose projects impact regional areas gave an update on the progress they are making in carrying out the objectives of the CNAP. Federal topics included NHLBI-funded research; the Veterans Affairs telehealth program; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COPD surveillance data; the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health’s respiratory research agenda; and, the Health Resources and Services Administration’s activities to address COPD in rural areas. Organizations such as the COPD Foundation, the American Lung Association and the American Thoracic Society updated participants on steps they are taking to implement the CNAP from the national perspective. The morning session ended with regional initiatives underway by the Midwest Respiratory Health Association, Atrium Health, and Allegheny General Hospital.

The primary purpose of the meeting was to provide feedback on the development of a tracking and reporting tool to be used by the COPD community “to record their implementation activities and monitor progress toward meeting its goals and objectives.” When finalized it will offer an opportunity for data collection and collaboration among the participants.

Meeting Takeaway

“Respiratory therapists play an important role daily in carrying out provisions of this national plan through their care and treatment of COPD patients in various health care settings,” said Anne Marie Hummel, AARC associate executive director for advocacy and government affairs. “The AARC is proud to be a part of the COPD community in continuing the dialogue on this important and timely initiative.“
