As part of Big Ideas Theater 2018, Garry Kauffman, MPA, RRT, FACHE, FAARC, discusses the challenges facing respiratory care as a profession. Specifically, he focuses on making the transition from World 1 to World 2.

According to Kauffman, World 1 is “the way we grew up.” He defines it as a fee-for-service delivery of care with no focus on patient value, safety, or advocacy. World 2; however, is value-based. Hospitals now receive benefits for hitting targets. World 2 focuses on cost, quality, and patient experience. Collaboration is also a big part of World 2.
