2021 started with much uncertainty, but with hopeful hearts set on a better future. We have witnessed thousands of people receive the COVID-19 vaccine along with many who have recovered from the illness. Though we have made great strides toward conquering the pandemic, there is still reason to be cautious. This is why the Sputum Bowl Committee has officially decided to cancel the 2021 Bowl.

The Committee has come to this difficult decision to ensure the safety of all involved and with the hopes of having a Sputum Bowl in 2022.

“The AARC Sputum Bowl Committee is sad that we will not be able to hold our annual national event in 2021. We love working throughout the year planning and preparing for this event and welcoming over 30 student teams from across the country,” said Sputum Bowl Committee Chair, Tom Lamphere, BS, RRT-ACCS, RPFT, FAARC. “Unfortunately, the current pandemic has forced all of us to change our lives and to put on hold many of the things we love to do and for us, that includes the Sputum Bowl! We can’t wait until we are able to continue this tradition in the future!”

The Committee hopes that over the next year, teams will be able to adequately prepare for the 2022 Sputum Bowl.

“It is essential to give teams time to prepare for such an event properly,” said Program Committee Chair, Brady Scott, MSc, RRT, RRT-ACCS, AE-C, FAARC, FCCP. “The last year has been so taxing for respiratory therapists, and understandably, some teams have not been able to prioritize the event. I am looking forward to getting back to ‘normal’ and watching teams compete again!”
