Elections Committee Questions:

What experience or significant contributions do you have to offer the AARC which would help accomplish one or more of the AARC Horizon Goals as presented by President Schell?

I have worked with the Iowa Society for Respiratory Care to provide grassroots efforts in our state to oppose legislation that has had a direct impact on our profession. I have the experience to speak to and write to local legislators, which gives me some experience that I could use for National Advocacy.

I also have a strong passion for education and professional development. I have implemented programs at my place of employment to allow for therapists to continue the path of professional development through advancement programs. I think this type of program development is a great resource that could be shared with other managers and directors in the profession. I have also been afforded the opportunity to share my knowledge as a leader at the AARC Summer forum and Congress and would like to continue to develop others that are moving the profession forward so that they may also present their information at both of these forums.

What ideas would you present to increase AARC membership?

As the Co-Chair of the student mentorship committee in the House of Delegates, I have been able to see first hand the impact that students have on the profession and what the profession has on the students. I really feel that the future is with students and if we want to increase membership, we have to focus our attention on creating interest with the students and maintaining that interest post-graduation. Our focus can’t be on the therapists and managers that have been practicing for more than 10 years now. If they wanted to join, they would have. Instead, we need to work with the new professionals coming out of the schools and find ways to connect with them and provide them with the information and first hand mentoring that it takes to keep them members of our great profession. I believe that we need to set students up with mentorship programs in each state and strongly encourage each state to begin mentor programs for students.

Role-Specific Questions:

What do you feel are the top two or three opportunities facing your section that you believe should be addressed during your term?

I believe that we have a strong section with many members, but I would like to continue to bring on new members, especially new leaders to the profession. I know that I didn’t really understand how this section could help me in my new role until another leader advised me to join. I think that we need to get the word out more to new leaders that this section would be invaluable to them as new leaders.

I would also like to see an online workshop created for new managers/directors/supervisors that they could attend to learn what the AARC has to offer them as a new leader and maybe even develop toolkits for them to use in their new roles.
