Elections Committee Questions:

What AARC or Chartered Affiliate offices/positions have you held where you feel you made a significant contribution to our profession? What is the contribution and how will you apply it to your new position, if elected?

While serving as the Co-Chair of the AARC HOD Chartered Affiliate/Special Recognition Committee, the other Co-Chair, committee members and I were charged with reviewing the applications for the Summit Award. After the first year, it became obvious there was a need for a more efficient, objective process. Therefore, I developed an Excel spreadsheet to enter all of the required criterion. Each criterion was assigned a weight based on the importance and significance to meeting the AARC’s mission and goals. Formulas were added to calculate and score the applications. The rough draft was submitted to the Committee’s Co-Chair for review. We submitted the edited draft to the committee members for discussion and further editing. The new application was presented to the HOD for approval and was accepted. The basic application template is now being used for each award in the HOD. I will apply my ability to develop processes to increase effectiveness and efficiency on the AARC Board of Directors.

What experience would you bring to the AARC to accomplish the goals set out by President Walsh?

My career as a Disease Manager at BlueChoice HealthPlan/BCBS of South Carolina has allowed me to gain the experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams which include, nurses, health educators, wellness coaches, utilization review nurses, CCMs and corporate leaders. This experience is beneficial in accomplishing not only the AARC Presidential goals, but the overall goal and mission of the AARC. I have also established relationships with decision-makers at BCBS of SC when they are considering telehealth, reimbursement, etc. I also feel my experience/strengths of problem-solving, being objective and passionate about goals are essential in accomplishing goals set by the AARC President and the AARC’s strategic goals. One of my strengths is also a weakness: I tend to have high expectations of myself. It is my belief that weaknesses are merely undeveloped strengths.

What ideas do you have to attract non-members to join the AARC?

There have been numerous efforts to increase membership. Now that most, if not all, states have signed the Revenue Sharing agreement, it is my thought to tie increasing membership to Revenue Sharing. When a state has a 10% or more increase in membership during the measurement year, that state will receive $1 – $2 more per member in revenue sharing for the following year. The state will receive the increase in revenue sharing for two years before being considered for any further increase, if membership is maintained.

Role-Specific Questions:

How would you, as a member of the AARC Executive Committee, work to move the profession forward based on the work done by our current and previous presidents?

The role of the AARC Board of Directors includes providing oversight of the business of the AARC in accordance with the Bylaws, to recommend edits/updates to policies, procedures and the Bylaws based on business changes and member and patient needs. Members of the AARC Board of Directors are currently faced with many issues. Personally, I believe we are headed in the right direction for advancing our profession. I feel the most prominent issue is being recognized as a health care provider by CMS and health insurers. Resolving this issue will benefit members in receiving optimal and quality care. However, the first step in achieving this goal is to change the entry level to a bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Care or a health-related field. Progress has already been made as the number of bachelor’s degree programs are increasing, thanks to special committees within the AARC. Although, I am not in the education field, anyone who has a voice can make a difference. I am making a difference by changing the respiratory therapist job description at my place of employment. The educational requirement is now a minimum of holding a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field. If every facility hiring respiratory therapists would adopt this standard, all new graduates from Associate Degree programs would proceed with getting their bachelor’s degree. Some of my strengths are being organized, providing evidenced-based outcomes (I love to research and read studies and outcomes) and speaking when I have something meaningful to say. These strengths are important to establish trust, rapport and credibility. These are all important when presenting the goal of recognizing respiratory care practitioners as qualified health care providers.
