The AARC has been developing clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) that pertain to the practice of respiratory care for decades now. These guidelines routinely help inform the delivery of care at facilities here in the U.S.
Now two of those guidelines — dealing with the effectiveness of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic airway clearance therapies in hospitalized patients — have been translated into Italian.
The International Council for Respiratory Care (ICRC) played an integral role in facilitating the translation, spearheaded by Simone Gambazza, PhD, PT, ICRC Governor for Italy.
Dr. Gambazza explained why he undertook the initiative on behalf of respiratory professionals in his country.
“On the international scene, AARC has been synonymous with reliability for years,” he said. “For the Italian association ARIR, the main goal is still to spread an evidence-based respiratory culture. The translation of the AARC’s CPGs on airway clearance, therefore, becomes part of the service we want to offer to our members and colleagues.”
ICRC President Daniel D. Rowley, MSc, RRT, RRT-ACCS, RRT-NPS, RPFT, FAARC, notes that one of the missions of the ICRC is to promote the art, science, clinical practice, and educational foundation for the attainment of high-quality respiratory care in all nations and assisting in the translation of evidence-based CPGs and other resources is an important part of that mission.
“The ICRC is committed to broadening the reach of AARC sponsored evidence-based CPGs by helping to translate published guidelines from English to other languages in an effort to promote safe and effective respiratory care practice worldwide,” he said.
As more AARC CPGs enter translation, recognition of the respiratory care profession grows around the globe, resulting in a higher level of respect for the role that RTs play in the care of people with respiratory conditions.
