What experience or significant contributions do you have to offer the AARC which would help accomplish one or more of the AARC Horizon Goals as presented by President Schell?
As chair-elect of the Respiratory Care Section for the Society of Critical Care Medicine, I organize effective business meetings, increase member engagement with simple communication strategies, and create more platforms for members to be involved. The result is an increase in educational resources, research support, and awareness of the irreplaceable value of the respiratory therapist. President Schell’s well-rounded vision of the needs and goals of respiratory care is possible by raising the cultural standard across our entire profession, institutions and its individuals. Advocating for such standards is achieved by opening communication channels and effectively connecting with AARC members, affiliates and related societies.
What ideas would you present to increase AARC membership?
Making prospective members aware of the many financial and professional benefits AARC has to offer is important at both the national and local level. Encouraging state affiliates to increase presence on social media and AARConnect are effective platforms that can be utilized even further. State society leaders should be the channel for making prospective members aware of growth opportunities, locally and nationally, by directly providing guidance and resources regarding active committees and office positions. As a chapter director-elect for the Indiana Society for Respiratory Care, I also see the value in providing the state societies with the possibility of a more updated approach for reaching out to current members for membership retention.
Role-Specific Questions:
What do you feel are the top two or three opportunities facing your section that you believe should be addressed during your term?
While there are many, one opportunity is to develop a plan to provide education on removing limitations from our scope of practice. Providing professionals with these resources will encourage the persistence to create more growth opportunities. Next, the section could work with department educators to require more intensive training and educational opportunities in specialty areas for improved quality care. For example, providing continuing education on individually dosing mechanical ventilation settings for each patient could improve patient comfort and decrease use of sedation. Finally, our section should develop a plan to raise awareness and focus on prevention of Post Intensive Care Syndrome and the detrimental long-term effects caused by the ICU environment.
