Retaining Talent, Growing the Profession

Not only do managers work hard to hire quality employees, but they also strive to retain these talented employees. AARC Member David Vines, RRT, a program director at Rush University Medical Center, shares his tips for departments and hospitals looking to improve their talent retention. He also offers suggestions for RTs looking to ensure their own talent is retained.

Advancing the profession

“Retaining talent is important to ensure that your department and the field of respiratory care continues to advance and grow,” Vines said.

He continued to explain that the profession needs individuals who are “capable of advancing into leadership roles and assessing current practices as well as integrating technology.”
“Without retaining creative, talented individuals, the profession would wither,” Vines said.

David’s tips for retaining talent

  • Engage these individuals in developing a shared vision.
  • Assign them projects that keep them challenged and growing.
  • Provide them with an environment that allows individuals to challenge process, so progress can occur.
  • Provide educational opportunities so they can advance their skills.
  • Celebrate the team’s accomplishments and recognize their talents publicly.

Vines explained that at Rush University Medical Center, where he works, they have had multiple individuals advance from entry-level therapists into leadership and faculty roles.

Ensure your own ‘talent retention’

For any RTs working to make sure their own ‘talent’ is retained and respected in their department/hospital, Vines suggests communicating your needs and seeking greater responsibility.
“If you work in a department where you feel that your talents are not being fully utilized, you should schedule a meeting with the director and ask how you can help advance the mission of the department,” Vines said. “You could also join a department committee and seek out a leadership role.”
